Winter feeding of birds
It is a good idea to start feeding birds when the temperature drops below freezing and the ground is covered in snow. The appearance of birds in the yard is a sign that wild food is starting to end.
Birds are free to feed in your own yard, but housing associations need to find out their own rules on feeding. It is also polite to discuss with your neighbours beforehand. When choosing a feeding area, place it away from buildings so that birds do not fly towards the windows. It is a good idea to have shelters for birds around the feeding area, such as bushes and trees. Position the feeding area so that cats have not an access to the birds.
Winter feeding should continue until the ground has melted from the snow again. Occasional feeding is no more than a momentary help for birds. This is important to remember in holiday homes. When birds are used to getting food from one place, they may not be able to seek place after the previous place runs out of food. Birds may even perish in severe frosts.
Lintujen talviruokinta
Lintujen talviruokinta on hyvä aloittaa, kun ilma menee pakkasen puolelle ja maa peittyy lumeen. Lintujen ilmaantuminen pihapiiriin kertoo, että luonnonvarainen ravinto rupeaa olemaan vähissä.
Lintuja saa ruokkia omalla pihalla vapaasti, mutta taloyhtiöissä on selvitettävä niiden omat säännöt ruokinnasta. On myös hyvä keskustella asiasta naapureiden kanssa etukäteen. Ruokintapaikka kannattaa sijoittaa kauemmas rakennuksista, etteivät linnut lennä ikkunoita päin. Sen ympärillä olisi hyvä olla suojapaikkoja linnuille, esimerkiksi pensaita ja puita. Sijoita ruokintapaikka siten, etteivät kissat pääse lintuihin käsiksi.
Talviruokintaa jatketaan siihen asti, kunnes maa on taas lumesta sulana. Satunnaisesta ruokinnasta ei ole linnuille kuin hetkittäinen apu. Tämä on hyvä ottaa huomioon esimerkiksi loma-asunnoilla. Lintujen totuttua saamaan ruokaa jostain paikasta, eivät ne välttämättä osaa hakeutua uudelle ruokintapaikalle, jos edellisestä paikasta loppuu ruoka. Linnut saattavat tällöin jopa menehtyä kovilla pakkasilla.
